Tibbies Cabaret Brings Back Dancing Queen on the Queen Mary
Thursday January 10, 2008
Tibbies Great American Cabaret dinner theatre is reprising their successful production of Dancing Queen on the Queen Mary for one month from January 11 through February 10, 2008. The musical revue compiles existing songs which are supposed to reflect the history of the Queen Mary, which they sort of do. They start with a medley of Titanic tunes representing the early immigrants and other travelers who made the transatlantic crossing in the ocean liner's early days. The history continues with a variety of Gershwin songs that might have been performed on the ship. The years spent as a military transport are represented by USO and Armed Forces medleys.
The second half is less clearly related to the ship's particular history, with songs of the fifties and sixties followed by a medley of "Sea" songs. Even if the Queen's history theme wasn't really clear, it was a great bunch of songs delivered by an outstanding blend of voices.
The dancing is a little over-the-top at times. The choreography for the men's 60's medley in particular was so flaming that I was waiting for them to substitute "boy" for "girl" in the Temptations' Get Ready. But they deliver the number with such absolute enthusiasm that it's pretty darn adorable. Dancing Queen runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7 pm from January 11 to February 10, 2008.
