If you're heading out to find a great view of the Hollywood Sign Thursday, February 11, 2010, you will be either disappointed or excited NOT to see the Hollywood Sign in its permanent home on the side of Mt. Lee. The Hollywood Sign will disappear from view for the day, covered with the words Save Our Peak, a plea to the public and Hollywood luminaries to help prevent development of the Cahuenga Peak. The area in question is the hilltop west of the sign, once owned by Howard Hughes, and now in the hands of potential property developers.
The Trust for Public Land's Campaign to Save Cahuenga Peak has managed to raise about half of the 12.5 million dollars they need to buy back the land. If they succeed, they will add the land to Griffith Park, which surrounds the sign in the other three directions. They are hoping that the publicity generated by covering up the sign with a Save Our Peak banner will help loosen the coffers of the donating public to raise the remaining funds by April, when their option to buy expires.
So if you want to capture that iconic image of the Hollywood Sign, you'll have to plan for another day, but Thursday you'll have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get a shot of the Save Our Peak sign.
