As a travel-insomniac, I am always looking for things that might improve my chance of sleeping when I’m on the road. So when I had a chance to check out the new Sleep Number Beds at the Radisson LAX during a recent conference, I jumped at it.

Highlights

  • Closest hotel to LAX
  • 580 guestrooms
  • Two restaurants, a lobby lounge and the Top of the Radisson penthouse and lounge
  • Staffed Business Center
  • Fitness Center and Outdoor Pool
  • Florist on site
  • Jeweler on site
  • Limousine and car rental available
  • Pets allowed up to 25 lbs

Airport Convenience

Located on Century Boulevard next to the giant LAX sign, you can’t get a room any nearer to Los Angeles International Airport than the Radisson. It is walking distance to Terminal One, so if you have an early flight out on Southwest Airlines, sleeping at the Radisson gives you a head start. You don’t have to walk though; the courtesy shuttle will drive you to any terminal on the LAX loop.

The Sleep Number Bed

Sleep Number Bed at Radisson Hotel Los Angeles Airport
For anyone who hasn’t heard the advertisements for the Sleep Number Bed, it is a pillow-top mattress with five different kinds of foam and filling surrounding air compartments that can be adjusted to be firmer or softer at the press of a button. I found the Sleep Number Bed very comfortable once I moved away from the foam frame which becomes perceptible at the edge of the mattress when the bed is on a softer setting. After a little experimentation, I settled on a cushy 45. Even when I was lying there not sleeping the first night, I was very comfortable.

It is useful to know in advance that the bed makes a lot of noise going from softer to firmer, so if you’re not sleeping alone, make sure to adjust the bed before your partner goes to sleep. If you’re not sure, start out firmer, because it’s quiet going from a higher to a lower number if you decide to adjust later. King size beds have controls for each side of the bed. Queen size beds have a single control.

Dining at the Radisson

The Palmira Bar and Grille is the Radisson's upscale restaurant, open for lunch and dinner. The Century Cafe offers more casual dining for breakfast and lunch. The Top of The Radisson Lounge has a hot food menu and the Concorde Lounge in the lobby has baked goods and sandwiches.

Of these, consensus among conference attendees was that the Palmira Bar and Grille and the Top of the Radisson Lounge both had excellent food, but the lunch buffet at Century Café was not up to the same standard, especially when faced with a hoard of conferees.

The Down Side

The one down side of the Radisson is that the ventilation system apparently hasn’t gotten the same update as the rest of the hotel. All the guests I spoke to were staying in non-smoking rooms on floors 8 to 10, as I was as well. All of our rooms smelled like smoke and the smell increased with use of the AC or heat. There was also visible mold on the air conditioning duct in my room, which would be a serious issue for people with mold allergies.
