Guide Review - Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club

I spent one night as a guest of the Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club: in Redondo Beach, CA. It's a nice spot for a getaway from the crunch of the city, situated directly on a peninsula in King Harbor Marina in Redondo Beach. My room showed a little wear and tear such as carpet stains and cup rings on furniture, but was comfortable, with a nautical theme. The public areas are elegant and welcoming.

The staff was pleasant and helpful when I kept putting my key card next to my cell phone and deactivating it.

Some rooms at the Portofino Hotel face the parking lot and the marina beyond (Marina rooms). My room had an ocean view looking out to the breakwater and the sea lions that hang out there on a wooden dock. As a bonus, there was a screen door to the balcony, so I could sleep with the ocean breeze. Ear plugs are provided, because the seals and sea lions can be a little rowdy with their barking, but I really enjoyed watching them over morning coffee on my balcony.

There is, of course, Wi-Fi for a fee and a small business center. I wouldn't want to spend all day in the desk chair, but the 8 outlets by the desk made it convenient to plug in my laptop and all my battery chargers at once.

There was a built-in headboard platform rather than nightstand. I would have liked an outlet by the bed so I could have my phone charging nearby, but the lamp chords went through a hole in the built-in, so you couldn't unplug a lamp to use the outlet.

In the bathroom, the motion detector lights that saved me searching for a light switch were appreciated, as was the adjustable height shower head. The bowl sink set into the black granite counter top at an angle are chic, but awkward to use with the faucet to the side. There was a makeup/shaving mirror, but it was all scratched on the magnified side, so it wasn't very useful. Large size toiletries that get refilled, rather than tiny ones that add to the landfill are a nice environmental touch.

The Portofino Hotel's on-site restaurant, Baleen Los Angeles, sits on the marina, with indoor and outdoor tables and an outdoor lounge with romantic waterfront fireplaces. There are a couple other restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and many more in the King Harbor area.

The hotel's elegant Living Room Bar is open every evening off the lobby, and is a pleasant place to relax and watch the sunset, even if you're not drinking.

The hotel is behind the marina breakwater, not directly on the beach, but with complimentary bike loans, you can be on the beach or at the pier in just a few minutes. Rocky Point Rentals, at one end of the hotel, offers kayak rental, fishing charters and scuba and snorkeling excursions.

Although the website says this hotel is convenient to Hollywood and Disneyland, it's not. It is, however only about 15 minutes from LAX and convenient to Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, as well as the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
