Guide Review - Sunset Marquis Hotel
The Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood has been a sanctuary for touring rockers and actors since 1963, when it was opened to house the talent for the Playboy Club at the corner of Alta Loma and Sunset Blvd. The club is long gone, but the expanded and many-times-remodeled Sunset Marquis still attracts the celebrity elite.

Music legends line the walls in photos taken on site by rock photographer Ross Halfin. But you're equally likely to run into them by the pool or in the bar. Mick Jagger and Ron Wood strolled through during my brief tour.

The Sunset Marquis is just off the Sunset Strip, not far from West Hollywood hot spots like the House of Blues, the Comedy Store, Whiskey a Go Go, and the Key Club. Yet behind the hedges, off a cul de sac created by closing off Alta Loma to traffic, is a landscaped village that incorporates hotel rooms, apartments and villas around several pools and green courtyards.

Once you get through the chic lobby, the main building looks like any other motel built in the 1960's with two stories of rooms built around a swimming pool. Pass through to the oasis beyond and the new garden terrace restaurant is surrounded by new Spanish-style villas and historic homes, including a former Barrymore residence.

Another attraction for rockers and film types is NightBird, the professional recording studio in the basement, opened in 1993, and totally updated in 2008-9, with state of the art equipment and a film editing and screening room. An underground garage allows guests to enter the studio or hotel without being seen.

If you're not staying at the hotel, you can still stop by for a drink at 1200 Bar, (voted Top Hotel Bar for 2008 on CitySearch) or dine at RESTAURANT.

Note: I have only toured this hotel and have not stayed there. If you have stayed at this hotel, you are welcome to add your review below.
