The Standard Downtown LA

About.com Rating 3.5

By Kayte Deioma, About.com

The Bottom Line
The Standard is a midrange hotel in downtown Los Angeles centrally located between the Music Center and the Staples Center/Convention Center area with easy access to the Fashion District and downtown museums. It has a 60's mod European feel with platform beds and fiberglass and chrome furnishings. Guests have priority access to the popular rooftop pool/bar, one of downtown's hottest night spots.

Guide Review - The Standard Downtown LA
The Standard Hotel in Downtown LA is not your standard hotel experience. This Euro-trendy boutique hotel is popular with international travelers and locals who don't want to drive home after partying downtown. The Rooftop Bar is one of LA's top night spots with a stunning view of the downtown skyline and rotation of 100 DJs. Guests get priority access.

It can be a challenge to navigate the entrance on a weekend afternoon when a crush of people line up to access the Rooftop Bar, while others mill about the outside lounge. There was no bell service, but the valet helped get my luggage up the stairs on the way in. On the way out, I was on my own.

The rooms are retro-mod with platform beds and Formica and chrome furnishings in 11 sizes from Cheap (AKA tiny) to Wow! (massive) with even larger penthouse suites. In smaller rooms, the shower is separated from the bed by a transparent glass wall, so check your modesty if you book a Cheap to Large room. Gigantic rooms have a huge tub in the middle of the room. Layouts are on the website.

The bed was super comfy and the bedding included a sheet, blanket and separate duvet. The platform is a bit awkward. The mattress was moved all the way to one side, making it easier to get in on that side, but there was no night stand (the platform acted as night stand on the other side). I came close to tripping over the platform several times.

The Standard Downtown LA is a fun place to stay or even to visit, from its sunny yellow restaurant, fuchsia Lobby Lounge and sunken outdoor patio to the ever-popular Rooftop Bar.
