The Bottom Line
The Viceroy Hotel is a fashionable upscale full-service boutique hotel in Santa Monica. Some rooms have an Ocean view, but you have to cross the street and pass another row of buildings to get to the beach. It looks pretty nondescript from the outside, but inside they've gone all out to achieve visual impact and comfort with a combination of modern and antique elements in sometimes quirky juxtaposition. A good spot to be pampered into hipness.

Guide Review - Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica
It's easy to drive right past the glass and concrete block behind high foliage that is the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica. What it lacks in exterior charm, the Viceroy makes up in interior chic. A row of counterfacing white leather chaises, which accommodate the overflow from the weekend bar scene, dominate the dark gray and green décor of the lobby, continued throughout the hotel.

Champagne at check in is the first hint of service which is more California fresh than traditional staid.

The hotel looks across Ocean Avenue buildings and the beach. Ocean view rooms are on upper floors. Sliding doors allow an open-air view of the sunset, but no balcony.

The rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. Modern elements blend with antiques and retro pieces.

The public areas of the hotel are welcoming, with plenty of comfortable seating in the bar, library, outdoor lounge and around the pools. Private cabanas are available for meals, meetings, spa treatments or just hanging out.

There is an added fee for just about everything, but at the same time, for a fee, you can get just about anything. There is a great full service restaurant on site. Spa services are available in your room or by the pool. The business center is fully equipped and can also provide cell phone rental and other services, but I find $0.69/minute for internet access ($41/hour) excessive.

The Viceroy attracts a power crowd of celebrities and business people who make deals lounging around the pool-side cabanas. The nightlife scene is popular with young professionals.
