Area nightclub is in a non-descript, unmarked, single story building on La Cienega between Melrose and Santa Monica. There's no sign, but the club can be identified by the red awning, the busy valet and the line of people waiting to get in. Like most LA clubs, the line is partially for show and they seem to let people in at a trickling pace to give the constant appearance of a line, even when it's not particularly crowded inside.
Big signs out front state that paying for valet parking ($20) does not guarantee getting into the club.
The interior of Area has been described as "residential," and it sort of reminded me of the community room in a dorm I once lived in when I was in college. Linoleum floors, metal-frame leather sofas in white and beige and exposed slate brick walls gave it a 60s suburban basement feel. The main club area has a long bar, a dance floor and plenty of standing room, with a few sofas and tables around the perimeter.
On the other side of a partition, a lounge area offers another bar and more seating, but it is all reserved for bottle service.
A semi-outdoor smoking patio is visible from the main club through a glass wall, and you have to walk through the smokers to get to the exit. Bottle service for smokers is available on the patio.
