The Richard and Karen Carpenter Center in Long Beach is a 1074-seat theater on the campus of California State University Long Beach. The stage is modeled after the New York State Theater of the Arts at Lincoln Center. The seating area is all orchestra seating with no balconies.
Although the theater is on campus, it is the home of several resident companies not affiliated with the university. These are Musical Theatre West, a professional regional theater company presenting a full season of musical productions each year; the Long Beach Opera Company, performing an opera series each June, the South Coast Chorale, a gay and lesbian choir and the Long Beach Community Concert Association, hosting a wide variety of singers, dance companies, instrumental and world music events throughout the year.
Richard Carpenter and his family are benefactors of the theater and there is a permanent exhibit on the Carpenters in the lobby. It includes photos and video of the duo's musical career, Karen's drum set, one of Richard's piano's and an impressive collection of gold records, as well as other awards and memorabilia. The Richard & Karen Carpenter Exhibit is open during performances and by appointment. Occasionally Richard Carpenter still puts in an appearance on the Carpenter Center stage.
